The resource-availability model of distraction and mind-wandering

چکیده
This article presents a cognitive model of distraction and mind-wandering that combines formalizes several existing theories. It assumes task-related goals opportunities for are continuously in competition mental resources. If the goal does not need particular resource at moment, likelihood it is captured by high. We applied this to explain results three experiments differ from each other number ways. The first experiment slow-paced study; main result less occurs if subjects have maintain an item working memory. second memory task which triggered presence self-referential words secondary task; these increase elaboration reduce performance. third arithmetic/ memory/visual attention task, became more distracted flanking (irrelevant) video as increased complexity: time think, they leave visual vulnerable distraction. Although phenomena been treated separately literature, we show can be explained single comprehensive based on assumption distractions target unused

Distraction and Mind-Wandering Under Load
Attention research over the last several decades has provided rich insights into the determinants of distraction, including distractor characteristics, task features, and individual differences. Load Theory represented a particularly important breakthrough, highlighting the critical role of the level and nature of task-load in determining both the efficiency of distractor rejection and the stag...
متن کاملWhy the Global Availability of Mind Wandering Necessitates Resource Competition: Reply to McVay and Kane (2010)
When the mind wanders, conscious thoughts come to mind that are only loosely related to the task being performed. This phenomenon produces tension within the cognitive sciences because the interfering nature of these thoughts is at odds with the assumption that such processes are functional in daily life. In their comment, McVay and Kane (2010) suggested that failures in executive control can c...
متن کاملInspired by distraction: mind wandering facilitates creative incubation.
Although anecdotes that creative thoughts often arise when one is engaged in an unrelated train of thought date back thousands of years, empirical research has not yet investigated this potentially critical source of inspiration. We used an incubation paradigm to assess whether performance on validated creativity problems (the Unusual Uses Task, or UUT) can be facilitated by engaging in either ...
متن کاملModeling mind-wandering: a tool to better understand distraction
When we get distracted, we may engage in mind-wandering, or task-unrelated thinking, which impairs performance on cognitive tasks. Yet, we do not have cognitive models that make this process explicit. On the basis of both recent experiments that have started to investigate mind-wandering and introspective knowledge from for example meditators, we built a process model of distraction in the form...
متن کاملMedicine for the wandering mind: mind wandering in medical practice.
CONTEXT Mind wandering--defined as a cognitive focus on information that is unrelated to immediate sensory input or the task at hand--is a ubiquitous characteristic of the human condition. When it occurs, the integrity of a wide range of cognitive skills can be compromised. OBJECTIVES The current paper describes the phenomenon of mind wandering, explores its potential role in medical practice...
